Biography

SFC Christopher A. Celiz is inducted in the Ranger Hall of Fame for distinguished service to America and for his enduring devotion to the values captured in the Ranger Creed. Celiz is a native of Summerville, South Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Army in September 2006 and completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training as a Combat Engineer (12B) at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Ranger SFC Celiz’s first assignment was with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Following this assignment, Ranger Celiz was transferred to Company C, Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, also at Fort Hood, serving as a Team Leader. SFC Celiz was then assigned to the 530th Engineer Clearance Company, 92nd Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, where he served as a Sapper Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant. SFC Celiz’s remarkable career as an Army Ranger began in 2013, when he was selected to serve with the 75th Ranger Regiment and was assigned to Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, where he served as the Battalion Master Breacher and Engineer. In March 2017, he was assigned to Company D, where he served as the Mortar Platoon Sergeant. Throughout his career, Ranger Celiz deployed a total of seven times in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Ranger Celiz was killed in action on July 12, 2018, in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, while serving as the leader of a special operations unit comprised of partnered forces and members of the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. On this day, Ranger Celiz changed the course of the battle by repeatedly placing himself in extreme danger to protect his team and defeat the enemy. Ranger Celiz distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while engaging with the enemy, posthumously earning the Medal of Honor on December 16, 2021. His exceptional leadership and service are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Ranger Creed, and reflect great credit upon himself, the United States Army Rangers, and the United States Army.
